Privilege, Oppression, and Mental Health: Recognizing Our Pasts Through Our Testimonies

Image
SSOHIS MENTAL HEALTH "The world I inhabit and the world that inhabits me are inseparable parts of the whole that is the 'I' that I am. In this complicated society, mental health is a topic seldom broached. It would be an understatement to suggest that discussions on mental health are off-limits in my culture. We rarely talked about things like depression and anxiety when I was growing up in my traditional Yoruba home on Lagos Island. It wasn't until I sat across the desk from a former professor that I truly grasped what it meant to deal with one's feelings. When I first started having problems with my mental health, it was extremely difficult to convince anyone, including myself, that I needed help. Recognizing mental illness is the first step on a long and winding road that doesn't necessarily lead somewhere. The patriarchal nature of Yoruba society doesn't help. While women are constantly pressured to suppress their true selves for the sake of a societ...

It’s okay that your plans have changed.

Image
Life has a funny way of leading us down paths we never anticipated. Remember those grand plans we made as we entered university and the dreams we thought were set in stone?  When you start university, you hold all of these expectations. You might think you don’t, but you do. You have expectations for your classes, your courses, your lectures, your friends and your life. I can’t say exactly where these expectations come from. If I had to guess, I’d say they come from a little space inside your heart, where you’ve come to store all the ideas, plans and dreams you’ve developed over the years. By the time you first set foot on campus, the little space is overflowing with excitement. As Life really had its own ideas. But you know what? It’s okay that our plans have changed . It’s what makes our story beautiful. Everything we do has a purpose and direction. We plan, set goals, and work hard. It feels good when things go as planned. But we must understand that life is...

Tackling Environmental Challenges at Our School: A History and International Studies Student's View

Image
Hey there, fellow students! Today, let's dive into a topic that affects us all: chemicals, waste, and pollution issues right here at our school. It might not be something we discuss in history class, but understanding these problems is crucial for our environment and our health. Picture this: our beautiful school campus is facing some not-so-pretty challenges. Trash piling up, chemicals being mishandled, and pollution making the air less clean, plastic bottles scattered around the campus, electronic waste piling up, and air that sometimes doesn't smell quite right. Yep, we've got our own environmental struggles that deserve attention. Just like how history is shaped by different factors, our environmental problems have their roots too. It's often due to things like not recycling properly, old buildings causing pollution, and maybe a lack of awareness about the impact we're having. It's not just about a messy campus; it's about the bigger story of...
