Adventures are some of the moments in life, which makes our heart pump faster and gives us the feeling of being alive and full. Activities like horse riding, bungee jumping, river rafting, parasailing, skiing, kayaking, paragliding, mountain climbing, freefalls etc. are called adventure activities. All of these activities also have a risk factor, but that is what makes them exciting. Adventure activities must be done under expert supervision, which will keep you safe in case of any emergency situation. Everyone should indulge in some adventure activity in their lives because we only live once.
Numerous prominent landmarks can be found across Nigeria but one stands out from the pack for both its aesthetics and historical significance.
To the Egba people, Olumo Rock was a refuge – a safe haven during the intertribal war of 1830. The 137-metre high monument is now held in the highest regard by the Egba community and its surrounding area.
Located in the southwest area of Nigeria in the city of Abeokuta, the impressive monolith is the source of the state capital’s nomenclature ‘Abeokuta’ which translates into ‘under a rock’. In recent times, the Ogun State government’s impressive effort has totally transformed Olumo Rock into an attractive tourist destination.
Olumo Rock is located centrally, right at the heart of Ogun State. Abeokuta is about an hour drive from Lagos.
The view from the top of Olumo is breathtaking, presenting an unobstructed view of Abeokuta in its entirety. The mountaintop presents a lot of camera-worthy moments that will serve as moments to remind you of your visit to Olumo Rock. Also, there are loads of instagrammable scenes for the social media app lovers. There are multiple caves located in and around Olumo Rock. You can either explore the rock by yourself or hire an on-site freelance guide.
There is an eatery on-site or you could go with a picnic basket and have a good time at the well-kept garden. Also, an art gallery where you can feed your eyes and buy locally crafted art is on the premises. Itoku is a local market where you can buy tie-and-dye which is known as Adire and other things like bracelets and sculptures.
